Betsy on the Pine Valley spawn tracks
Betsy the Porter (Formally Pine Valley Lumber Company No. 1) is a small Class B 8-ton Porter locomotive built by the H.K. Porter company, and is spiritually Engine 1 of most railroad companies made in Railroads Online. She is the starting locomotive in the Pine Valley map, and one of three in the other three maps, the others being the Class 25 and the Shay. The engine which she is, the Porter 0-4-0ST, was part of the original roster of locomotives. As such, Betsy has been the starting engine since the game's release.
Trivia[]
- The reason as to why her name is Betsy:
Railroads Online's creator, Stefan Kelnberger, thought up the fact that the name "Bertha" be used for large and heavy machines. (an example being Big Bertha, an 0-10-0 steam locomotive that worked on Britain's Lickey Incline). Ironically, however, this engine is the smallest in the game, so the name would not exactly fit. He then thought of turning the name into "Betty", as it sounded slightly more Americanized. Afterwards, "Betty" was changed to "Betsy" as it was seen as a much cuter name. It was identified as "Americanized and (a name that) would fit quite well."
- Originally Betsy did not spawn with a headlight, but she now does on the newer maps.
- She also goes by the full names "Betsy the Porter", "Starter Engine Betsy", and "Good Ol' Betsy"
- Betsy, being characterized as female, is the only engine in the game to officially be characterized with a gender, ignoring the fact that steam locomotives are all spiritually referred to as female.
- In fan lore, she also has a love interest: a Porter 0-4-2 named Ike. This makes the pair Betsy and Ike, a reference to the titular pair in the well-known American folk song Sweet Betsy from Pike.
