The Porters are two different locomotives based on the Type B-S built by H. K. Porter & Co. Both were part of the original roster of locomotives, with the 8-ton design serving as a starting engine since the game's release.
Porter (0-4-0ST)[]
The Porter (0-4-0ST) is the cheaper option of Porter, and is the game's smallest locomotive. Upon starting the game, the Porter that the player starts with is named "Betsy" and bears the number 1. The Porter 0-4-0ST is modeled after an 8-ton Porter type B, one of Porter’s popular models for narrow gauge and industrial operations. The engine (known by many as “Betsy” in game) is useful for negotiating tight curves on a tight budget, though it lacks strength and firewood capacity, making it useful for shorter runs. This model was used at the Lackawanna Iron and Steel Company, as well as on the Antelope & Western (as their #1 locomotive). It was also used in logging operations, quarries, and other industrial sites due to its small size.[1]
Porter (0-4-2ST)[]
The Porter (0-4-2ST) is slightly more expensive than the 0-4-0ST Porter, but it carries over twice as much fuel in the form of firewood. The Porter type B-S 9-Ton was an extension of the 8-ton design, allowing for more cab space, and extra firewood storage. The advantages and disadvantages of the 9-ton are similar to the 8-ton, though with extra fuel storage the 9-ton can get a bit more mileage per refuel. Like the 8-ton, the 9-ton is great for industrial switching, and moving about in tight areas with less-than-adequate track conditions. No B-S 9-Ton locomotives survive in this configuration, but one 3-foot 0-4-2 steam tram built by Porter can be found at Fort Worden State Park, of similar design to the B-S 9-Ton.[1]
